The In-between

The In-Between

Prologue:

Bang!

A boy sat at a desk in his first grade class. He looked up, hearing the sound. The teacher continued talking. He continued he work. He looked up again and listened close. Tiny footsteps echoed next to him.

“Kion White,” The teacher suddenly said. “What is three multiplied by two?” Kion looked up at his teacher.

“The answer is six Mrs. Vixen.” He replied. The teacher nodded and pointed to another student and asked her a question. Kion looked down at his feet. A tiny creature was scampering up his leg.

“Mrs. Vixen!” He yelled. Mrs. Vixen turned towards him, a scowl on her face.

“Mr. White, what is the meaning of this interruption?” She asked him.

“There is a thing on my leg. Come look.” The thing on his leg smiled and disappeared. Mrs. Vixen came and examine his leg. She stood and smiled.

“Kion, I know sitting in a classroom for a few hours is hard at your age. That does not give you a reason to lie and make up a story to get out of class.” Mrs. Vixen turned and continued her lesson. Kion frowned. He swore he saw it. The day continued without the thing coming back. That night at the dinner table, it landed in his food. Without him noticing.

“So Kion, how was school?” Mrs. White asked.

“Pretty good. I learned about multiplying by two.” Kion looked at his meatloaf. His meatloaf stared back.

“That’s great honey.” Mrs. White turned to her daughter. “Rowen, how was your day?” As his sister recounted the day’s events, Kion looked at the thing. Its hair was purple. The thing was only about three inches tall. It was wearing a jade green dress with black boots. Tiny wings sprouted from it back. It climbed over to him and climbed onto his head.

“Mom!” Kion yelled. “There is a purple haired creature on top of my head.” Mrs. White turned towards him. The creature poked his nose.

“Son, you have a vivid imagination.” Mr. White said. Kion slumped in his seat and pouted. Why did no one believe him? The creature, bored with him, disappeared. Kion excused himself from the table and got ready for bed. As he climbed into his bed, he looked out window and whispered,

“Is there anybody else like me?”
